NEW DELHI – The country's first indigenously built micro light-emitting diode display is likely to be produced in the next 22 months, Union Minister of Railways, Information and Broadcasting, Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said Monday. Vaishaw was speaking at the Confederation of Indian Industry Annual Business Summit 2026 in New Delhi.

"Micro LED is today one of the leading technologies, which is rapidly shrinking...India has an opportunity to take the lead as the technology changes. So that's why we decided to go for micro LED as a technology, and from today, let's say about 22 months from now, we should have the 1st production of micro LED screens coming out of our factory," Vaishnaw said.

Last week, the Union Cabinet had approved two semiconductor manufacturing projects under the India Semiconductor Mission. The two semiconductor projects will be set up in Gujarat with a cumulative investment of INR 39.36 billion and will generate employment for 2,230 skilled professionals.

On artificial intelligence, the Union minister urged the industry to train its workforce in AI. "Our strategy is very clear, very focused on getting the use cases, becoming the use case capital of the world, and I'm constantly in touch with our IT industry. They feel that the AI job growth will be kind of, it's almost like it's growing almost 15-20%. Yes, many other parts of the IT industry will have to be transformed now, but the AI-related job growth is happening, and we have to be very careful in it, and I request NASSCOM and CII to be a full-fledged partner in training our people towards this new wave of technology which has come, so that our people are ready for this technology," the minister said.

On data centres, the minister said, approximately $200 billion in investment is coming into the data centre economy. "We have the data centres, we have that entire capacity, the capability, the way to utilise this new technology," the minister said. End
