MUMBAI – India's foreign exchange reserves fell $7.79 billion on week to $690.69 billion as on May 1, data released by the Reserve Bank of India Friday showed. The rupee depreciated over 0.7% against the dollar during the trading week ended Apr. 30 in the wake of the continued geopolitical crisis in West Asia. Money markets were shut on May 1 for Maharashtra Day and Labour Day.

Foreign exchange reserves were down due to an on-week fall of $2.80 billion in foreign currency assets at $551.83 billion. The value of the central bank's gold holdings also fell $5.02 billion on week to $115.22 billion as of May 1.

Calculated in dollar terms, the RBI's foreign exchange reserves also reflect the impact of appreciation or depreciation of currencies other than the dollar, such as the euro, the pound sterling, and the yen held by the central bank.  End

US$1 = INR 94.48
