Banks' investments up 2.9% YoY as of Apr 15 vs 4.5% rise Mar 31

--CONTEXT: Banks' investments were up 4.5% YoY as on Mar 31
MUMBAI – Investments by banks grew 2.9% on year to INR 68.84 trillion as on Apr. 15, but were down INR 767.32 billion from the previous reporting fortnight, data released by the Reserve Bank of India Wednesday showed. The annual pace of investment growth eased in mid-April from 4.5% as of Mar. 31.
Bank loans rose 15% on year as of Apr. 15 and deposits were up over 12.2% on year, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India Friday. The loan growth slowed down from 16.1% on-year a fortnight ago and deposit growth slowed down from 13.5% on year in the fortnight to Mar. 31.
Bank loans were at INR 209.21 trillion as of Apr. 15, down INR 4.39 trillion from a fortnight ago. Non-food loans were at INR 208.53 trillion as of Apr. 15, down INR 4.37 billion from the previous fortnight. Food loans fell INR 1.78 billion from the previous fortnight to INR 68.49 billion as of Apr. 15.
Bank deposits as of Apr. 15 fell INR 5.81 trillion, or 2.2%, from a fortnight ago to INR 256.48 trillion.
In December, the government changed the definition of a reporting fortnight under the banking laws. The definition of "fortnight" has been changed from a Saturday-to-Friday cycle to a clearly defined two-part monthly period — either the 1st to the 15th of each month or the 16th to the last day of the month, both days inclusive. In the release Wednesday, the previous year's data was for Apr. 18, 2025.
