MUMBAI – Most parts of the Konkan coast, including Mumbai, have not recorded any rainfall in April, unlike other subdivisions of Maharashtra, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. Though pre-monsoon showers are likely to increase over most parts of the country this week, Mumbai is likely to remain dry, hot, and humid, the weather agency said. However, no heatwaves are likely over the city during this period.
The city last recorded heatwaves in March, when maximum temperatures rose above 40 degrees Celsius on Mar. 10, the weather agency said. In April so far, the highest maximum temperature was 36 degrees Celsius. Though hot and humid weather has been prevalent all month, temperatures have not breached the heatwave category, and similar conditions are likely to persist this week, the agency said.
A strong anticyclonic circulation lies over the Arabian Sea, off the Konkan Coast. This weather system is pushing strong northwesterly winds along the coastline and facilitating the early onset of sea breeze over Mumbai, the weather agency said. Sea breeze is in excess of 30 kilometres per hour during the late morning, afternoon, and evening hours. This is likely to continue this week, suppressing any sharp rise in temperature. As such, no heatwaves are expected during the period. However, humidity levels will remain very high and extreme sultry conditions are expected during the afternoon hours, the agency said. End
