FADA says electric vehicle sales rose 25% in FY26, share in PVs rises most

--FADA: FY26 total EV retail sales 2.45 mln units, up 24.6% on year 

 

NEW DELHI – Every automobile segment reported a double-digit increase in retail sales of electric vehicles in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations said in a release Tuesday. Penetration of electric vehicles increased across segments, but the passenger vehicle segment saw the biggest rise, data shows. Overall, dealerships sold 2.45 million electric vehicles in FY26, up 25% from the previous year.

 

Retail sales of electric passenger vehicles surged 84% to 199,923 units in FY26, primarily led by a staggering performance by Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. sold 78,811 electric cars in FY26 – the most in India – up 36% from the previous year. JSW Motor India Pvt. Ltd. sold 53,089 units, up 74%. 

 

M&M, which entered the electric car space only recently with its pure electric vehicle range, sold 42,721 cars in FY26, compared to 8,426 units a year ago. Overall, the market share of electric cars in India rose to 4.2% in FY26 from 2.6% in FY25.

 

Dealerships sold 1.40 million electric two-wheelers in FY26, up 22% on year. Penetration of electric vehicles improved to 6.5% in FY26, up 40 basis points from FY25.

 

TVS Motor Co. Ltd. climbed one spot to the top rank as its sales grew 44% to 341,513 units. Ola Electric Technologies Pvt. Ltd. faltered sharply as the company lost its leadership position to Bajaj Auto Ltd. and dropped to the fourth spot.

 

Retail sales of Ola Electric's two-wheelers tumbled 52% on year to 164,295 units. Bajaj Auto gained one spot to become India's second-best electric two-wheeler seller as sales of its Chetak scooter grew 25% on year to 289,349 units. Ather Energy Ltd. posted a healthy 82% on-year growth in its sales to 239,178 units in FY26.

 

Electric three-wheeler sales in FY26 climbed 19% on year to 830,819 units, FADA data shows. This segment has the highest penetration among all segments, at 60.9% as of Mar. 31. In FY25, electric three-wheelers' share stood at 57.2%.

 

M&M sold 101,873 electric three-wheelers in FY26, up 46% on year while Bajaj Auto sold 89,604 units, up 76%. TVS Motor saw the sharpest jump as retail sales of its electric three-wheelers zoomed to 27,831 units in FY26, up from 1,696 units in FY25.

 

Retail sales of electric commercial vehicles more than doubled to 19,454 units in FY26, up from 8,820 units a year ago.  End
