NEW DELHI – The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has denied news reports and social media posts about an oil tanker carrying 600,000 barrels Iranian crude being diverted from its final destination in Vadinar, Gujarat, to China due to "payment issues", terming the reports as "factually incorrect".
In a post on social media platform 'X', formerly Twitter, the ministry said India imports crude oil from over 40 countries, with companies having full flexibility to source oil from different sources and geographies based on commercial considerations. "Amid Middle east (West Asia) supply disruptions, Indian refiners have secured their crude oil requirements, including from Iran and there is no payment hurdle for Iranian crude imports as per some rumours being circulated," the ministry said in the post.
Claims on vessel diversion ignore how oil trade works, it further said. "Bills of Lading often carry indicative discharge ports destinations and on-sea cargoes can change destinations mid-voyage based on trade optimisation and operational flexibility," the ministry said, reiterating that India's crude oil requirements remain fully secured for the coming months.
