--Govt restricts imports of some metal products
NEW DELHI – The government Thursday imposed restrictions on imports of base metals or silver clad with gold with immediate effect, according to a notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade.
Among the key changes, imports of base metals or silver clad with gold in semi-manufactured form have been shifted from "free" to "restricted". Similarly, imports of items under the precious metals segment, including articles of goldsmiths' or silversmiths' wares, parts of such articles, and other goods clad with precious metals, have also been restricted.
The notification also extended the restrictions to other product categories, such as catalysts, laboratory and industrial articles made of precious metals, and certain non-legal-tender coins.
At the same time, the government has eased norms for certain categories of platinum. Imports of platinum in unwrought and powder forms, as well as other variants, have been made free from the earlier restricted status. However, imports of platinum alloys containing more than 1% gold by weight will continue to be restricted.
The notification also provided relief for export-oriented sectors. Imports by 100% export-oriented units and units operating in special economic zones will remain exempt from these restrictions, provided the goods are not diverted to the domestic tariff area, it said. Imports undertaken for export purposes under the gems and jewellery scheme will also not be subject to the curbs, it said.
The revised policy will apply immediately and cover all shipments regardless of prior contracts, irrevocable letters of credit, or advance payments, the notification said. End
