NEW DELHI – India's goods and services tax collections, excluding cess, grew 8.8% on year to INR 2.001 trillion in March, government data released Wednesday showed. Including cess, the GST mop-up rose 2.1% on year to INR 2.002 trillion. The government's total GST collections for 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), excluding cess, were 22.271 trillion, up 8.3%.

Including cess, the government's total GST collections in FY26 were INR 23.258 trillion, up 5.6%. As per the revised Budget estimates, the government's GST collections in FY26 were projected to grow 5.4% on year. "India's GST collections in FY26 provide a strong fiscal mirror to the country's GDP growth momentum," said Vivek Jalan, Partner at Tax Connect Advisory Services. "This tax buoyancy aligns with India's estimated GDP growth of around 7% for FY26, underscoring the link between rising consumption, expanding imports, and robust compliance."

In February, GST collections, including cess, had grown 2.8% on year to INR 1.888 trillion. The government's cess collection fell to INR 1.03 billion in March from INR 125.48 billion a year ago. In FY26, the government's total cess collections were INR 1.047 trillion, down 31.7% on year.

In September, the GST Council had lowered the indirect tax on several goods and services and reduced the number of tax slabs to two--5% and 18%--from four earlier. The council also removed the compensation cess on all items, including tobacco products, for which the levy ended on Jan. 31. The government has instead imposed an excise duty on cigarettes in the range of INR 2,050-INR 8,500 per thousand sticks based on the length and type of product.

Central GST collection in March was INR 405.49 billion, up from INR 381.45 billion a year ago. State GST collection last month was INR 532.68 billion, up from INR 498.91 billion collected in March 2025. Integrated GST mop-up was INR 1.062 trillion, up from INR 958.10 billion a year ago.

Domestic GST revenue grew 5.9% on year in March to INR 1.462 trillion, and import revenue increased 17.8% on year to INR 538.61 billion. GST revenue, net of refunds and excluding cess, rose 8.2% on year to INR 1.780 trillion in March. Refunds, excluding for cess, during the month rose 13.8% on year to INR 220.74 billion. The post-settlement revenue of states was INR 908.17 billion in March, up 5% on year.

"GST collections continue to show steady 9% annual growth, supported by strong import activity this month and consistent compliance," said Abhishek Jain, Indirect Tax Head and Partner, KPMG. "While export refunds have eased this month, they remain healthy overall for the year."  End
