NEW DELHI – Net claims of non-residents on India fell by $10.9 billion from a quarter ago to $260.5 billion at the end of December, data from the Reserve Bank of India Monday showed. Indian residents' overseas financial assets zoomed while foreign-owned assets in India grew at a much slower pace, leading to a fall in net claims on India during the quarter.

Outward direct investments rose by $7.6 billion during the quarter, while currency and deposits rose by $9.4 billion. On the liabilities side, an $11.4-billion increase in trade credit offset the drains from lower inward direct and portfolio investments.

The ratio of India's international assets to international liabilities improved to 82.1% as of the end of December from 81.4% a quarter ago. The ratio has improved sharply from 74.6% at the end of December 2024, the RBI said.

Reserve assets fell by $12.4 billion in the December quarter, to $687.7 billion as of Dec. 31, accounting for 57.4% of overseas financial assets held by Indian residents. The reserve assets rose 8.2% on year.  End
