Over 1.6 mln UPI fraud cases involving INR 12 bln reported in so far in FY26

NEW DELHI – Incidences of fraudulent practices, including Unified Payments Interface frauds, have gone up with an increase in digital payment transactions, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said Tuesday. As of Mar. 15, more than 1.63 million cases of Unified Payments Interface fraud were reported in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), involving a total of INR 12.26 billion, Chaudhary told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.
In the financial year 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), 1.26 million such frauds were reported, involving INR 9.81 billion. In FY24, more than 1.34 million fraudulent transactions were reported, involving INR 10.87 billion.
According to the latest data from the National Payments Corp. of India, the number of Unified Payments Interface transactions rose to 20.39 billion in February, marking a 21% increase from a year earlier. In value terms, UPI transactions increased 18% on year to INR 26.84 trillion in February.
"In order to strengthen fraud detection, various initiatives have been taken up by the government, the Reserve Bank of India and the NPCI," Chaudhary said. Two-factor authentication and a daily transaction limit are some of them, he said.
The minister also said that almost 8 million digital payment frauds have been reported to the RBI, with an estimated value of INR 130 billion. He said the government, regulators and other stakeholders have been taking various initiatives to protect digital transactions. End
