NEW DELHI – Only 123,877 government employees have shifted to the newly launched Unified Pension Scheme as of Mar. 12, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said Monday. "The number of employees who were given the offer to shift from National Pension System to Unified Pension Scheme, as on Apr. 1, were 24,13,612," he said in his written response to a Lok Sabha question.
"No survey has been conducted to ascertain the reasons for low interest shown by government employees to opt for UPS," Chaudhary said. The Unified Pension Scheme, which came into effect on Apr. 1, was launched in response to persistent demand from central government employees for an assured pension scheme.
The government initially set Jun. 30 as the deadline to switch to the new pension scheme. Later, it extended the deadline to Sept. 30 and then to Nov. 30 due to muted response. End
