NEW DELHI – The government is not looking to introduce production-linked incentive scheme to increase local manufacturing of power transmission and distribution equipment, a power ministry official told Informist Saturday. "There's a huge market, people are coming...as of now we've not thought much on the PLI. Only for steel we thought...cold-rolled grain oriented but it be not worth it," the official said.

This comes as the Central Electricity Authority is actively advocating for localisation of power transmission and distribution components to reduce India's reliance on imported advanced equipment. As per media reports, the statutory body is holding discussions with industry players to identify areas of action to eventually share a proposal with the power ministry.

"A lot of people are making (power transmission and distribution equipment)...we have a problem with bushings, transformer, and cold-rolled grain oriented steel...Nobody has asked that I want a PLI. If they ask then we will see," the official said.

India's transmission and distribution sector has relied on imports for critical components, including transformers and tower parts. It is often cited as among the top-three challenges by transmission companies as longer lead time in procurement leads to project delays.  End
