NEW DELHI – India is focussed on scaling up green hydrogen derivatives such as green methanol and green ammonia to drive investment in the sector, Abhay Bakre, mission director of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, said.

Speaking at the Bharat Electricity Summit on Friday, Bakre said the government is working to build an ecosystem around hydrogen derivatives to improve the commercial viability and adoption of the technology. India plans to offer green methanol to the shipping sector, while green ammonia has been finalised as a 25% replacement for grey ammonia in the fertiliser sector, he said. However, demand remains a key challenge, he said, adding that the government is increasingly focusing towards demand creation.

Bakre added that the government is confident of achieving its target of producing 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030. According to him, green gas and its derivatives will likely become price-competitive across sectors within the next five to seven years given the uptick in domestic production. India imports nearly 95% of its methanol requirement through imports, which pushes up the cost, he said.  End
