NEW DELHI – The government has resources to serve peak power demand of up to 270 gigawatts in the upcoming summer season, Power Minister Manohar Lal said Thursday. India's power demand had touched a high of 242.49 GW last year.
India's total installed power generation capacity rose to 509.74 GW last year. The government aims to complete installation of power transmission lines of 900 GW by 2030, Lal said at the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026 here.
Lal mentioned that the government aims to extensively expand India's energy grid network. He also proposed setting up an under-sea solar grid network with the United Arab Emirates.
Further, the minister said the government aims to improve India's energy affordability. The objective is to improve the competitiveness of Indian manufacturing by making electricity more affordable, reliable, and responsive to market needs, Lal added. End
