NEW DELHI – Pradyut Bordoloi, the sitting Lok Sabha member of Parliament from Nagaon in Assam, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday in New Delhi, in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, a day after resigning from the Indian National Congress. Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra termed his resignation as "unfortunate". Bordoloi had sent his resignation letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge Tuesday, shortly after the Election Commission announced that Assam Assembly elections will be held on Apr. 9.
"It is very unfortunate. I think he was upset over one ticket allocation, and we wish we had a chance to have a conversation about it," Priyanka Gandhi said Wednesday.
In a brief letter to Kharge, Bordoloi said he was quitting with an "overwhelming sense of sadness", resigning from all posts and primary membership. Bordoloi's exit comes amid reports of differences with Assam state Congress President Gaurav Gogoi. His resignation came as a big jolt to the Congress party which is seeking to return to power in the state after 10 years. Last month, former Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah had also switched over to the BJP. End
