MUMBAI – The Reserve Bank of India was awarded the 'Initiative of the Year' recognition by London's Central Banking for its '.bank.in' domain, the central bank said Tuesday in a post on microblogging site X. "By mandating a domain name for the country's lenders, the RBI has struck a blow against cyber fraud," Central Banking said in a post while announcing the award.
The introduction of '.bank.in' domain makes India the first country globally to mandate a secure and exclusive internet domain for the banking system, the RBI said. "The transition enhances consumer confidence, helps reduce digital payment frauds and strengthens financial stability," the RBI said in its post.
The RBI had first announced in February 2025 that it would introduce an exclusive internet domain for banks called '.bank.in' to reduce cyber-security threats and malicious activities such as phishing, and streamline secure financial services. The domain was launched on Apr. 22 with a proposal to later extend it to non-bank entities in the financial sector through '.fin.in'.
As of Dec. 1, 638 banks had initiated the process of obtaining the domain, of which 479 banks have already migrated to it, the central bank had said in its Trend and Progress of Banking in India 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) report released towards December end. London-based Central Banking analyses data and publishes reports on global monetary policy, macro economy, central banks, and more. End
