--Lok Sabha revokes 8 MPs' suspension after govt, Opposition reach consensus
NEW DELHI – The Lok Sabha Tuesday revoked the suspension of eight Opposition members who were suspended during the first leg of the Budget session, after the government and the Opposition reached a consensus.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju moved a resolution to revoke the suspension of Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Hibi Eden, Dean Kuriakose, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Manickam Tagore, Prashant Yadavrao Padole, Chamala Kiren Kumar Reddy, and S. Venkatesan, which was passed by the House with a voice vote. While Venkatesan is a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the rest belong to the Indian National Congress.
The development came after the suspended members and some senior Opposition leaders met Speaker Om Birla and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rijiju on Monday. These members were suspended from the House for the remainder of the Budget Session after a ruckus in the House on Feb. 3.
Rijiju said that there should be a "Lakshman Rekha" for members from both sides that they must not cross. He sought assurance from the Opposition leaders that their side would abide by the rules. Samajwadi Party's Dharmendra Yadav and Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar)'s Supriya Sule said that if members of the treasury benches promised to not disturb them, the Opposition was ready to cooperate for the smooth functioning of the House.
With the restoration of the suspended members, the Lok Sabha is expected to function smoothly for the rest of the Budget Session that will conclude on Apr. 2. End
