--Minister Goyal: To roll out insurance-related scheme for shipments to support exporters
NEW DELHI - The government will soon roll out an insurance scheme for shipments to support exporters amid trade and supply disruptions due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said Tuesday. The conflict, which began Feb. 28 following joint military attacks by the US and Israel on Iran, has led to trade disruption and the shutdown of the important transhipment route of the Strait of Hormuz by Tehran.
The government has formed an inter-ministerial panel to address the concerns of exporters facing trade disruption. "We are in constant dialogue with stakeholders to understand their concerns and take required steps," Goyal told reporters on the sidelines of an event in Delhi.
The inter-ministerial panel, led by the commerce ministry, includes officials from the shipping ministry, the finance ministry and the Reserve Bank of India. The panel meets exporters regularly to review their concerns and propose measures to address these. On Monday, the government eased norms for handling export cargoes returning to Indian ports due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and maritime disruptions. According to the customs department's relief measure, the returning vessels can only park at the same port of departure, provided they did not cross India's territorial waters and had not called any foreign ports. The new norms are valid for 15 days, starting Mar. 8. End
