NEW DELHI – Amid the disruption in the supply of liquefied petroleum gas due to the war in West Asia, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has constituted a committee to examine LPG requirements of restaurants, hotels, and other industries, including

automobiles. The panel, comprising executive directors from state-owned oil marketing companies Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd., Hindustan Petroleum Corp. Ltd, and Indian Oil Corp Ltd., will review the representations for LPG supply to these sectors and try to provide some volumes to them, the oil ministry said.

Following the disruption, the government has ordered refineries to focus on production of LPG for household consumption. Last week, the government had also asked them to prioritise the use of propane and butane for domestic LPG rather than for petrochemical production. LPG is a combination of propane and butane.

India has been facing constraints in the supply of crude oil and natural gas following the US and Israel launching a joint military attack on Iran on Feb. 28 and retaliation by Tehran, which has led to tension in West Asia -- the source of India's 50% LPG imports. Iran has also shut down the Strait of Hormuz, an important trade route for global crude oil supply flows, which connects the Persian Gulf with the Indian Ocean.

"The ministry has prioritised domestic LPG supply to households and introduced a 25-day inter-booking period (instead of the earlier 21 days) to avoid hoarding/black marketing," the ministry said in a post on X. "Non-domestic supplies from imported LPG are being prioritised to essential non-domestic sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions."

Saturday, Indian Oil Corp. Ltd. increased the price of domestic and commercial LPG cylinders sold under its "Indane" brand across metropolitan cities by INR 60 per cylinder. The price of Brent Crude has jumped 45% to over $100 per barrel since Feb. 28. The conflict in West Asia is currently in its second week with no sign of de-escalation.  End
