MUMBAI – The FAO All Rice Price Index averaged 103.2 points in February, up a marginal 0.4% from January, but down 2.5% from a year ago, according to data from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. Prices of rice followed mixed trend across various markets last month, according to the report.
The Japonica rice price index rose to 100.3 in February, up 3.7% from the previous month, reflecting sustained demand for Calrose from Far Eastern buyers coupled with seasonally tight availability in Vietnam. Prices of Fragrant rice rose by 1.8% on month but increases in this segment were largely confined to prices of basmati rice in Pakistan, which drew support from deals with Near Eastern buyers and domestic demand. However, the Glutinous rice price index fell by 1.8% month-on-month in February to 105.9 while the Indica rice price index fell slightly on-month to 103.3, the report said.
Prices of Indica rice in Asia were mostly steady or weaker in February, as trading activities were quiet due to the Lunar New Year celebrations and as market participants awaited the arrival of fresh harvests in India, Thailand, and Vietnam. "Where prices tended to move up, increases were mostly associated with currency movements or to tighter supply availabilities, as was most notably the case of parboiled rice in Thailand," it said. The price of 100% Thai parboiled rice rose to $443.3 per tonne in February from $428.3 per tonne in January.
India's Pusa Basmati variety remained unchanged at $1,150.0 per tonne in February from the previous month. The average price of 25% broken non-basmati rice exported from India rose to $338.5 per tonne in February from $337.2 per tonne in January and that of 5% broken non-basmati rice rose to $352.0 per tonne from $351.4, the release showed. The price of 5% parboiled rice from India was down slightly at $356.2 a tonne from $356.7 per tonne in January.
The price of Thailand's A1 Super rice variety rose to $384.3 a tonne in February from $383.3 per tonne in January while that of Thailand's 25% broken variety rose to $403.7 per tonne from $402.3. The price of Vietnam's 25% broken rice rose to $336.2 a tonne in February from $335.1 per tonne in January. Pakistan's 5% broken rice fell to $364.8 a tonne from $373.9, while basmati rice rose to $1,064.9 per tonne last month from $990.7 per tonne in January. End
