NEW DELHI – Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri Thursday visited the embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran and signed the condolence book there to condole the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei.
"Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran and signed the condolence book, on behalf of the people and the Government of India, on the demise of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei," the Ministry of External Affairs posted on X.
Khamenei and several other senior Iranian leaders were killed in a US-Israel strike on Feb. 28, even as Iran was actively in talks with the US in Oman over its nuclear programme. This is the first time since Feb. 28 that India has condoled Khamenei's death.
Earlier in the day, the opposition Indian National Congress questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence over the conflict in West Asia, and alleged that Modi was being "controlled" by "Gangs of Epstein". The principal opposition party said that Modi's silence on the "illegal war imposed on Iran" was hurting India's interests.
"A condolence that is extracted through political pressure or public persuasion is no condolence at all -- it is a hypocritical face-saving exercise, directed at headline management," Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said on X, shortly after the statement by the Ministry of External Affairs. End
