NEW DELHI – India and Finland are entering into a strategic partnership in digitisation and sustainability that will deepen cooperation in advanced technology and various critical sectors, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said here Thursday.
"This partnership will boost cooperation in high-tech fields of artificial intelligence, 6G telecom, clean energy and quantum computing," Modi said at a joint press briefing with visiting Finland President Alexander Stubb.
This partnership will extend to key sectors of defence, space, semiconductors and critical minerals, Modi added.
He said that strategic partnership between "democratic and responsible nations" like India and Finland will help ensure trustworthy technology and supply chain to the world.
The prime minister said that India and Europe are entering the golden age of their diplomatic relations. The recently-concluded free trade agreement with the European Union will also boost trade, investment and technology cooperation with Finland, he said.
"India and Finland are important partners in digital technology, infrastructure and sustainability. Nokia's mobile phones and telecom network have connected millions of Indians," Modi said, highlighting the role of the Finnish telecommunications company whose mobile phone handsets were very popular in India.
Modi said that Finland is becoming a preferred destination for Indian students and talent. "In order to connect the innovation ecosystems of the two countries, we have today signed a comprehensive migration and mobility agreement with Finland," he said.
Along with this, the two countries are going to bolster joint research and start-up ecosystem, Modi said. India is also going to host world circular economy forum in collaboration with Finland.
Commenting on the global geopolitical situation, Modi said both India and Finland believe in rule of law, dialogue and diplomacy. "We are unanimous that no issue can be resolved through military conflict alone. Be it Ukraine or West Asia, we will continue to support all efforts for an early end to the conflict and peace," he said.
The prime minister underlined that reform of global institutions is "not only necessary but urgent" to address the growing global challenges. He said it is the common commitment of the two countries to root out terrorism in all its forms. "Let's start a new golden chapter in this futuristic partnership," Modi said. End
