MUMBAI – India received average rainfall of 0.9 millimetres in the week ended Wednesday, 86% below the normal of 6.5 millimetres for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department. Since Jan. 1 to Feb. 28, the country has received 16.0 millimetres of rainfall, 60% below the normal of 39.8 millimetres, the data showed.

Out of the four homogeneous regions, three recorded below-normal rain during the week and one got above-normal showers. In east and northeast India, 2.6 millimeters of rainfall was recorded, which is 74% below normal of 10.1 millimetres, according to the data. There was no rainfall in northwest India, against the normal of 12.0 millimeters and in central India too, the rainfall was nil or 99% below the normal of 2.3 millimetres for the period, it said. On the other hand, the southern peninsula received 2.4 millimetres of rain, which was 9% above normal, the data showed.

Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, one received "normal" rainfall and 12 recorded "large deficient" showers, while two recorded "deficient" rainfall. One subdivision received "excess" rain and four subdivisions received "large excess" showers. There was no rainfall in 16 subdivisions during the week.  End
