MUMBAI – The sowing of summer crops has commenced across India, with the acreage touching 2.65 million hectares as of Friday, down over 3% from 2.74 million hectares in the corresponding period last year, according to agriculture ministry data. The area under rice, the largest summer crop by both acreage and production, was 2.18 million hectares as of Friday, down 7% from 2.35 a year ago.
The area sown under all coarse cereals rose nearly 12% on year to 188,000 hectares, the data showed. The acreage under maize, the leading summer coarse cereal in terms of area and production, fell to 133,000 hectares from 136,000 hectares a year ago. The area under bajra was 31,000 hectares, up from 21,000 hectares at the same time last year.
The total area sown under pulses was 115,000 hectares, up 11.6% from the previous year. Moong acreage rose over 4% to 73,000 hectares, and that of urad rose to 32,000 hectares from 30,000 hectares last year. More
The total area sown under oilseeds rose 34% on year at 169,000 hectares, the data showed. The area under groundnut was 133,000 hectares, up from 102,000 hectares a year ago. The acreage under sesame rose to 26,000 hectares from 17,000 hectares.
The normal acreage during the summer crop season, based on the average area covered from 2022-23 (Jul-Jun) to 2024-25, is 7.54 million hectares. The summer crop season in India runs between the rabi and kharif seasons, typically spanning from March to June.
