NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday said India reiterates the need for an early cessation of hostilities in West Asia. He spoke with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu and United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the matter over the weekend. In a social media post, Modi said India supports "de-escalation, regional peace, security and stability".

Modi's comments came after the US and Israel launched joint military strikes on Iran's capital Tehran over the weekend. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei was killed in these strikes. In retaliation, Iran launched missiles which hit the US Navy's fifth fleet in Bahrain.

In a post on X, Modi said, "Had a telephone call with PM Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the current regional situation. Conveyed India's concerns over recent developments and emphasised the safety of civilians as a priority. India reiterates the need for an early cessation of hostilities."

There were also reports of explosions in Abu Dhabi and other parts of West Asia. Iran has also shut the Strait of Hormuz, a trade corridor that connects the Persian Gulf to the Indian Ocean.

In a separate post after talking to UAE president, Modi said "...Strongly condemned the attacks on the UAE and condoled the loss of lives in these attacks. India stands in solidarity with the UAE in these difficult times. Thanked him for taking care of the Indian community living in the UAE. We support de-escalation, regional peace, security and stability."  End
