M&M's Feb auto despatches grow 18% on year; SUV sales growth at 5-month low

NEW DELHI – Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. sold 97,177 automobiles in February, up 18% on year. The company sold 60,018 utility vehicles last month, up 19% on year, marking the slowest growth in five months.
"February saw SUV sales of 60,018 units, a growth of 19% reflecting robust customer demand across the portfolio," the company's automotive division chief Nalinikanth Gollagunta said in a press release. Including exports, Mahindra & Mahindra's passenger vehicle sales stood at 60,685 units. In Apr-Feb, sales of its passenger vehicles in India grew 19% on year to 600,004 units.
The company's commercial vehicle sales in India grew 10% on year to 24,585 units. Sales of light commercial vehicles with a payload capacity under two tonnes fell 4% on year to 3,169 units while those with a payload capacity over 2 tonnes but under 3.5 tonnes grew 12% on year to 21,416 units.
Wholesale sales of three-wheelers, including electric variants, grew 44% on year to 9,190 units. Overall automotive exports by the company grew 11% on year to 3,384 units.
FARM EQUIPMENT
M&M sold 34,133 tractors in February, up 34% on year, registering robust growth in domestic and overseas markets. Tractor sales in India surged 35% on year to 32,153 units while exports grew 20% on year to 1,980 units. In Apr-Feb, the company sold 481,368 tractors, up 24% on year.
"Robust growth in the rabi sowing area, healthy reservoir levels, favourable kharif harvest is strengthening cash flows in rural markets. These positive sentiments along with Navratri in this month will help boost tractor demand," Veejay Nakra, president of the company's farm equipment business, said in the press release.
TRUCKS, BUSES
M&M sold 3,018 buses and trucks in February, up 13% on year. These are vehicles with a payload capacity exceeding 3.5 tonnes and are sold under M&M's trucks and buses division and SML Mahindra Ltd. "Commercial vehicle industry continues to show strong momentum since last quarter, reinforcing confidence in the sector's trajectory," said Vinod Sahay, president of SML Mahindra.
The company sold 1,521 cargo vehicles to dealerships in February, up 12% on year, and 1,497 passenger vehicles under this division, up 15% on year. In Apr-Feb, M&M sold 27,197 trucks and buses, up 16% on year.
"Looking ahead the outlook remains robust, underpinned by ongoing government investments, accelerated fleet modernisation, and steady freight movement. At the same time, we remain attentive to emerging challenges, including geopolitical developments, and other external factors," Sahay said.
For the December quarter, M&M had reported a net profit of INR 39.31 billion on a revenue of INR 385.17 billion. Friday, its shares had closed 2.5% lower at INR 3,397.40 on the National Stock Exchange. End
