NEW DELHI – Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. Sunday said it sold 213,995 automobiles to dealerships in February, up 7% on year but down almost 10% on month. The number of cars the company sold in February was the lowest in five months. The company maintained that demand for cars across segments remains strong but said capacity constraints had limited its ability to service demand in all segments.

Sales of mini cars remained flat on year at 10,238 units while sales of compact cars fell 9% on year to 66,386 units. The models sold in these two segments are the Alto, S-Presso, Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, and WagonR.

Maruti Suzuki sold 161,000 passenger vehicles to dealerships in India in February, unchanged on year and down almost 8% on month. Within this, despatches of utility vehicles grew at a robust 12% on year to 72,756 units. Models sold in this segment include the Brezza, Ertiga, e Vitara, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, Victoris, and XL6. Sales of the company's Eeco vans grew about 1% on year to 11,620 units.

Sales to other original equipment manufacturers fell 1.5% on year to 10,710 units in February. Yet this is the highest number of cars shipped to other automakers in five months. These are vehicles manufactured by Maruti Suzuki but sold to other companies, primarily Toyota Kirloskar Motor, which then rebadges them and sells them as Toyota cars.

Domestic wholesale sales by Maruti Suzuki in February grew marginally on year to 174,840 units. Exports grew 57% on year to 39,155 units. In Apr-Feb, Maruti Suzuki sold 2.20 million vehicles. Domestic sales stood at 1.80 million units and exports at 400,734 units.

For the December quarter, Maruti Suzuki had reported a net profit of INR 37.94 billion on a revenue of INR 498.92 billion. Friday, its shares had closed 2.3% lower at INR 14,857 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
