MUMBAI – Odisha's mines department has sent a show-cause notice to Tata Steel Ltd.'s subsidiary Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd. over a shortfall of INR 5.88 billion. The department said it had found a shortfall in royalty paid to the state government from the subsidiary's mining operations, according to an exchange filing Saturday.
"(There is) shortfall towards additional charges on dispatch of Iron Ore between the period February 2022 and March 2025, calculated at 150% of royalty payable under Section 8A(8) of Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2021," the company said in a filing.
Neelachal Ispat said the show-cause notice has made an error and the iron ore mine does not fall under the purview of Section 8A(8) of the Act. The subsidiary said it would reply to the notice and may pursue legal options as well.
For the December quarter, Tata Steel had, on a consolidated basis, reported a net profit of INR 26.89 billion on a revenue of INR 570.02 billion. Friday, the company's shares ended 1.5% lower at INR 212.33 on the National Stock Exchange. End
