NEW DELHI – The Indian embassy in Abu Dhabi Saturday issued an advisory for Indians in the United Arab Emirates to avoid unneccessary travel and remain vigilant, in view of the current situation in the region. The Indian embassy had issued a similar advisory to Indians in Israel earlier in the day.
The advisories came after tensions in West Asia escalated earlier in the day when the US and Israel launched joint military strikes on the Iranian capital, Tehran. In a retaliatory move, Iran's missiles hit a key service centre of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet in Bahrain. Explosions were also reported in Abu Dhabi.
Air defence systems have intercepted "a number of ballistic missiles" fired by Iran at sites in Abu Dhabi, media reports said, citing the UAE defence ministry. An Asian national died after missile debris struck a residential area, it said.
The embassy of India in Abu Dhabi and the consulate general in Dubai are continuing to function normally and will issue updates as neccessary, the embassy said. It has also issued a toll-free emergency helpline contact for Indians in the UAE. End
