MUMBAI – Domestic airline companies Air India and IndiGo on Saturday suspended their operations amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The no-frills carrier IndiGo cancelled all flights to and from West Asia till midnight. Air India has also suspended its operations in the region, but it was unclear how long the flight operator plans on continuing the restrictions. Air India's low-cost fleet, Air India Express, has also halted its operations.

"These measures have been instituted as the safety and security of our customers and crew is our highest priority," IndiGo said on social media platform X. Air India also cited the escalating tensions in West Asia as the reason for disruptions, adding that it "remain(s) committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety for passengers and crew." It added: "We will continue to assess the safety and security environment for our flight operations and adjust operations proactively as required."

Earlier in the day, IndiGo had said that all flights were running on schedule and that it was actively monitoring the developing situation. The airline urged customers to check their flight status prior to departure. If a customer's flight is impacted, they can plan alternate travel options, or opt for a full refund, IndiGo said.

Tensions in West Asia escalated earlier in the day when the US and Israel launched joint military strikes on the Iranian capital, Tehran. US President Donald Trump said in a video posted on his Truth Social account Saturday that the US military has begun a "massive" ongoing combat operation in Iran with the aim to eliminate threats and ensure the country does not obtain nuclear weapons. Earlier this week, negotiations between Iran and the US over a deal did not come to a fruitful conclusion, Trump said.

On Friday, shares of InterGlobe Aviation, which operates under the brand name IndiGo, ended over 2% lower at INR 4,827.20 on the National Stock Exchange. For the quarter ended December, InterGlobe Aviation reported a net profit of INR 6.13 billion on a revenue of INR 234.72 billion.  End
