Govt expenditure on major subsidies rises 5.1% on yr in Apr-Jan

NEW DELHI – The government's expenditure on major subsidies in the first 10 months of 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) rose 5.1% on year to INR 3.549 trillion, according to data from the Controller General of Accounts released Friday. Expenditure on major subsidies in Apr-Jan accounted for 83% of the revised Budget target of INR 4.297 trillion for FY26.

 

The government's food subsidy bill declined 4.5% on year to INR 1.628 trillion in Apr-Jan. Spending on fertiliser and petroleum subsidies rose 14.3% and 26.5% on year, respectively, during Apr-Jan. The government's fertiliser subsidy bill was INR 1.832 trillion in the 10 months to January and the petroleum subsidy bill was INR 88.23 billion.

 

For FY26, the government has revised upward the estimates for expenditure on major subsidies to INR 4.297 trillion from INR 3.834 trillion pegged in the Budget for FY26. The government's subsidy bill in FY25 was INR 3.850 trillion.
