NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet Tuesday approved the extension of the Ahmedabad metro from GIFT City to Shahpur at an estimated cost of INR 10.67 billion. The project will be completed in four years.

The new GIFT City to Shahpur corridor will be 3.33 kilometres long and will have three elevated stations, a government press release said. The corridor is expected to benefit approximately 23,702 passengers per day in 2029 and approximately 58,059 passengers in 2041.

The corridor will strengthen connectivity between Ahmedabad and the GIFT City region. Major multinational companies, educational institutions, and commercial centres located along the proposed route will directly benefit, the release said.

The project is expected to generate around 1,000 construction jobs, and around 250 people will be employed in the post-construction phase for operations and maintenance.

The extension project will be implemented by Gujarat Metro Rail Corp. Ltd., a joint venture of the Central and Gujarat governments.  End
