EPFO to return funds worth INR 305 mln in inoperative accts - Govt sources

NEW DELHI – The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation is looking at returning funds worth INR 305.2 million lying in inoperative accounts having balance of INR 1,000 or less, sources in the Ministry of Labour and Employment said. The EPFO is looking to return these funds to Aadhaar-linked bank accounts in a pilot, sources said.
There are 3.19 million inoperative accounts with the EPFO having funds worth INR 109.03 billion, sources said. Of this, 711,000 accounts have balance less than INR 1,000 with total funds of INR 305.2 million.
An EPFO accounts become inoperative and stops earning interest 3 years after a person retires or after the age 55. An EPFO accounts also becomes inoperative once an employee reaches the age 58. End
