--Sitharaman: Too soon to comment on latest US tariff developments
--CONTEXT: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's remarks post RBI board meet
NEW DELHI – Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said Monday it was too early to comment on the impact of the recent developments on US tariffs on the Indian economy. The government is assessing the potential impact of the developments on India's bilateral trade deal with the US, announced earlier this month, the minister said at a press conference after addressing the Reserve Bank of India's central board.
"On the Indian economy, I think it's a bit too soon for me to comment," the finance minister said. "On the trade (deal), particularly... the commerce ministry is reviewing the situation. The delegation will have to take a call on when they're going to go for further negotiations."
US President Donald Trump Saturday announced an additional 10% tariff on exports from all countries to the world's largest economy, only to increase it to 15% later in the day. The move came after the US Supreme Court struck down most of the tariffs announced by Trump, noting that he exceeded his authority in imposing sweeping import duties on nearly all of Washington's trading partners. The "temporary import duty" will take effect at 1031 IST Tuesday, a White House fact sheet said.
Various media reports said India and the US have postponed the scheduled three-day meeting of their chief negotiators this week. Addressing a press conference after announcing the additional duty on all countries, Trump said, "... nothing changes (on the trade deal with India). They'll be paying tariffs and we will not be paying tariffs... the India deal is on." End
