MUMBAI – Heavy rainfall is likely over parts of south Tamil Nadu and Kerala over the weekend due to the presence of two low pressure areas over the Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department said. Currently, a low pressure area lies over the equatorial Indian Ocean and southwest Bay of Bengal, which is likely to move west-northwestwards towards Sri Lanka and become less marked in the next 24 hours. A fresh upper cyclonic circulation has formed over the same region, which is likely to form a low pressure area in the next 24 hours, the weather department said.

The same weather systems are also likely to cause light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala on Friday and Monday, the weather department said.

A western disturbance acting as a cyclonic circulation lies over north Rajasthan and the adjoining parts of Punjab and Haryana, the weather bureau said. Another feeble western disturbance is likely to form, affecting the western Himalayan region from Sunday, the bureau said. These weather systems are expected to cause rainfall or snowfall over parts of Himachal Pradesh on Monday and over Uttarakhand from Sunday to Tuesday, the bureau said.

Light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is also likely over parts of the Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand on Tuesday and over Odisha on Monday and Tuesday, the weather bureau said.

Minimum temperatures over northwest India are expected to gradually rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the next seven days, the weather department said. In east India, minimum temperatures are likely to rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the next four days. In Maharashtra, the minimum temperature is expected to gradually increase by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the next four days, after which a gradual fall in the same range is expected in the subsequent three days, the department said.

In Gujarat, the minimum temperature is likely to gradually rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the next two days, the weather department said. No significant change in minimum temperature is expected over the rest of the country, the department said.

Maximum temperatures over northwest India are expected to gradually rise by 3–4 degrees Celsius in the next seven days, the weather bureau said. In central India, maximum temperatures are likely to slowly rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the next three days, the bureau said.

No significant change in the maximum temperature is likely over Maharashtra in the next 24 hours, after which a gradual rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius is seen in the subsequent three days, the weather bureau said. In Gujarat, no significant change in maximum temperature is expected in the next 24 hours, and thereafter a gradual rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius is expected in the subsequent two days, followed by a gradual fall in the same range in the subsequent four days, the IMD said.  End
