NEW DELHI – After a "serious foray" into the semiconductor industry, the Tata group aims to next build domain-centric and Artificial Intelligence-optimised chips for every industry, starting with the automotive sector, Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran said at the AI Impact Summit 2026 here Thursday.

"At the Tata group, we're adopting AI across the stack, from silicons to systems, AI-ready data centres to applications and AI agents," Chandrasekaran said.

The Tata group is establishing a large-scale AI-optimised data centre, purpose-built for next-generation AI training and inference. It has partnered with global AI research and deployment company OpenAI to build the first 100 megawatt-capacity which will scale to 1 gigawatt. The conglomerate also announced a strategic collaboration this week with Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. to create sustainable and high-densiy AI capacity in India for global standards.

The group is also building an AI data insights platform based on diverse Indian data sets on top of foundational models. Among other initiatives, group companies Tata Consultancy Services and Tata Communications are together building an AI operating system for industries, Chandrasekaran said. "What we will do is to build agentic industry solutions for every industry. We're already well on that journey and we will work with partners to be able to launch it and take it to all enetrprises around the globe," he added.

Chandrasekaran said AI is a foundational technology that cuts across industries and presents the biggest opportunity for the technology sector and the information technology industry. "Because the IT industry's real value is the context, and the understanding of every enterprise's business and technology landscape, and make the right technology work inside the processes and the ecosystem, the sublayer, the customer, and all the other connections the enterprise has. AI will expand that role much further," he said.  End
