--PM Modi: AI a turning point for human civilisation
NEW DELHI – Terming artificial intelligence a turning point for human civilisation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday called for a larger vision for AI, while also urging to be responsible in its use.
"We need to keep our vision (for AI) big but be responsible as well. Apart from the current generation, we have to be conscious about what form of AI we will leave for the coming generation," he said at the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi.
The prime minister also emphasised the need for democratising AI, saying one needs to ensure that human beings don't become mere data points or raw materials in an AI ecosystem.
"AI is a transformative power, if directionless it can cause disruption. With the right direction, it can lead to solutions," Modi said. "The main aim of this Global AI Summit is to see how we can make AI human-centric from machine-centric, sensitive and responsible."
It must be ensured that AI is accessible and inclusive for all, Modi said while urging for the need to focus on AI skilling and re-skilling among people, and make it a mass movement. The prime minister also presented the 'MANAV' vision at the AI Summit – 'M' for moral and ethical system for AI, 'A' for accountable governance of AI, 'N' for national sovereignty on AI data, 'A' for accessible and inclusive AI, and 'V' for valid and legitimate AI. India's MANAV vision would be an important link in the 21st century AI-centric world, he said.
"It is tough to imagine what kind of jobs AI will create in the coming times. The future of work is not pre-defined. It depends on our course of action and decisions," he said. "I believe future of work is a new opportunity. It is an era of working together with humans and intelligence system."
Modi also stressed the need to make the AI-space safe for children and family-guided. He also urged to take a pledge to make AI a global common good, saying one of the biggest needs right now was to create a global standard, as deep fakes and fabricated content are destablising the open society. "The AI models that succeed in India can be deployed globally. This is why I invite everybody to design and develop in India, deliver to the world and humanity," he said.
Before Modi's address, Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw Thursday announced the New Delhi Frontier AI Commitments, terming these as a significant outcome of the India AI Impact Summit and a shared voluntary framework adopted by leading global and Indian AI companies.
The framework rests on two core pillars – the first focuses on advancing real-world AI usage through anonymised and aggregated insights. Vaishnaw said the effort is to push for evidence-based policymaking on jobs, skills and workforce development while safeguarding user privacy. The second commitment is strengthening multilingual, contexutal and use-case evaluations. "This is especially important for the Global South, to ensure that AI works effectively across languages and cultures," Vaishnaw said. End
