MUMBAI – The spell of rainfall and thundershowers over the plains of northwest India is expected to cease from Friday, making it the last of showers the region receives for the season, private weather agency Skymet said. Post this, the region is likely to face warmer weather. "The winter chill appears to be over in the plains of north India, with double-digit minimum temperatures expected to prevail across the region," the weather agency said.
The presence of a western disturbance across the north Indian mountains and a cyclonic circulation over the plains caused widespread rainfall and thundershowers over parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana on Wednesday. The wet spell is likely to persist over Delhi, southwest Uttar Pradesh, south Haryana, northeast Rajasthan, and northwest Madhya Pradesh on Thursday, and cease by Friday, the weather agency said. "This was the first and possibly the last wet spell of February covering vast areas of North India," it said.
The two weather systems are likely to persist over northwest India on Thursday, with the western disturbance weakening by the end of the day and the cyclonic circulation dissipating by the end of Friday. As such, day temperatures may remain low till Friday and rise thereafter, the weather agency said. Night temperatures are unlikely to witness any sharp drop, signally the end of winter in north India.
Surface and low-level winds are expected to strengthen over the weekend as part of the transition towards the pre-monsoon season, the agency said. This is likely to cause a short spell of rainfall over parts of east and central India, namely Odisha, Chhattisgarh, east Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and north Madhya Maharashtra, on Sunday and Monday, it said.
