NEW DELHI – India will scale up its compute capacity beyond the existing 38,000 graphics processing units with the addition of 20,000 graphics processing units in the coming weeks, Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said Tuesday at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi.
Vaishnaw also highlighted that India is among the rare countries where more than 50% of power generation capacity comes from clean sources, which provides a significant advantage to the country. Talking about India's sovereign artificial intelligence models, the minister said that several models launched at the summit have been tested and measured against multiple parameters. "When compared with global models, several Indian models have been rated better than many large international artificial intelligence systems, underscoring India's innovation capabilities," he said.
The minister also said that the future skills programme, which was launched three years ago, is now being deployed for artificial intelligence-based reskilling. He also acknowledged the potential misuse of artificial intelligence, saying that India's 'AI Safety Institute', a virtual institute working with multiple academic institutions, is developing technical solutions to prevent misuse of artificial intelligence.
Vaishnaw also called artificial intelligence as the 'fifth industrial revolution', since it impacts every section of the economy and society. The minister also reaffirmed commitment to the semiconductor mission, stressing that design will be the primary focus in semiconductor 2.0. He added that at least 50 deep-tech startups are expected to emerge from India in the coming years, driven by current innovation and development efforts. The India AI Impact Summit is scheduled to end Friday. End
