MUMBAI – Heavy rainfall over parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala is forecast on Saturday and Sunday, the India Meteorological Department said. Under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over the equatorial Indian Ocean and the adjoining central parts of south Bay of Bengal, a low pressure area formed over the region in the early hours Monday, it said. This weather system is likely to move more west-northwestwards and become more marked around Wednesday, and may eventually lead to the heavy rains.

Currently, a western disturbance acting as a cyclonic circulation lies over northwest Afghanistan and its neighbourhood. This is likely to cause rainfall or snowfall over parts of Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday and over Uttarakhand on Wednesday and Thursday, the weather department said. Same weather conditions are also expected to cause rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Rajasthan on Tuesday and Wednesday, and over Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday, the department said.

Dense fog conditions are expected during the morning hours in some pockets of Odisha till Wednesday, the weather bureau said. It has warned of hot and humid conditions over coastal Karnataka till Tuesday.

Minimum temperatures over northwest India are expected to gradually rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the next two days, after which they are likely to gradually fall in the same range in the subsequent two days, the weather bureau said. In central India, minimum temperatures are expected to gradually rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the next three days, the bureau said.

No significant change in minimum temperature is likely over Gujarat in the next two days, and thereafter a gradual rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius is seen in the subsequent three days, the weather department said. In east and northeast India, no significant change in minimum temperature is expected in the next three days, after which it is likely to rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the subsequent four days, the department said.

No significant change in minimum temperatures is expected over the rest of the country, the weather department said. In Gujarat and Maharashtra, no significant change in maximum temperature is likely in the next three to four days, after which a gradual rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius is seen, the department said. In both states, maximum temperatures are expected to be above normal by 2–4 degrees Celsius during the week, it said.

Maximum temperatures over the plains of northwest India are likely to be above-normal by 2–4 degrees Celsius during the week, with some temporary relief on Tuesday and Wednesday, the weather department said.  End
