MUMBAI – India's gross exports of gems and jewellery fell nearly 6% on year to $2.24 billion in January and gross imports were up over 1% on year at $1.44 billion, according to data from the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council. The country's gross gems and jewellery exports during Apr-Jan fell 0.6% to $23.19 billion, while imports rose 6% to $17 billion.

Overall exports of cut and polished diamonds fell nearly 4% on year to $979.27 million in January and imports rose nearly 216% on year to $170.39 million. In Apr-Jan, exports of cut and polished diamonds fell over 7% on year to $9.97 billion and imports rose nearly 19% on year to $1.23 billion.

The country's imports of rough diamonds rose over 2% on year to $8.95 billion during Apr-Jan. Exports of polished lab-grown diamonds fell nearly 3% on year to $83.45 million in the previous month.

India exported $883.12 million worth of plain and studded gold jewellery in January, down nearly 17% from a year ago. Exports of gold jewellery in Apr-Jan rose nearly 6% to $9.71 billion. Silver jewellery exports in Apr-Jan rose over 51% on year to $1.28 billion. Exports of platinum jewellery during the same period rose 49% on year to $215.15 million, according to the council.  End
