Cabinet approves 3 multitracking projects at total cost of INR 185.09 bln

NEW DELHI – The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs Saturday approved three multitracking projects of the Ministry of Railways at a total cost of INR 185.09 billion. The projects cover 12 districts across the states of Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra and Karnataka, increasing the existing network of Indian Railways by about 389 kilometres and will be completed up to 2030-31, the Cabinet said in a press release.
The Cabinet approved INR 101.54 billion for construction of the third and fourth line Kasara-Manmad railway project, INR 59.83 billion for third and fourth line of Delhi-Ambala railway project, and Ballari-Hosapete railway project worth INR 23.72 billion, as per the release.
"The increased line capacity will significantly enhance mobility, resulting in improved operational efficiency and service reliability for Indian Railways," the Cabinet Committee said. "These multi-tracking proposals are poised to streamline operations and alleviate congestion. The projects are in line with the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's Vision of a New India which will make people of the region "Atmanirbhar" by way of comprehensive development in the area which will enhance their employment or self-employment opportunities."
The projects are planned on PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan with an aim to boost multi-modal connectivity and logistics efficiency through integrated planning and stakeholder consultations, enabling seamless movement of people, goods, and services. The multi-tracking project will connect around 3,902 villages, benefiting a population of around 9.7 million, the Cabinet committee said in the release.
The capacity boost will enhance rail links to key tourist spots like Bhavli Dam, Shri Ghatandevi, Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra/Srinagar, and major attractions such as Hampi, Ballari Fort, Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary, the Tungabhadra Dam, Kenchanagudda, the Vijaya Vittala Temple etc., the Cabinet Committee said. Further, the projects will facilitate transport of key commodities like coal, steel, iron ore, cement, limestone or bauxite, container, food grains, sugar, fertilisers, boosting freight traffic by 96 million tonnes per annum.
According to the release, the Railways being environment friendly and energy-efficient will help achieve climate goals, cut logistics costs, reduce oil import by 220 million litres, and reduce 1.11 billion kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions – equivalent to planting 40 million trees. End
