MUMBAI – The Nifty Bank index is expected to consolidate next week and trade in a narrow band, continuing its muted trend from this week. Market participants will look for fresh cues now that most of the major bank earnings are out.

"The broader bullish structure remains intact as long as the index sustains above 59,700. RSI (relative strength index) around 54 is flattening, suggesting momentum is cooling," Vatsal Bhuva, technical analyst at LKP Securities, said in a note. "Resistance is placed near 60,800–61,000."

The Nifty Bank Friday settled at 60186.65 points, up 0.1% from the previous week. State Bank of India and IndusInd Bank were the top gainers in the index this week, while IDFC FIRST Bank and HDFC Bank were the top losers. On Feb. 7, State Bank of India, the country's largest lender, reported a profit after tax of INR 210.28 billion in the reporting quarter, up 4.3% sequentially and over 24% on year.

"For Bank Nifty, as long as it is trading below 60,500, weak sentiment is likely to persist," Amol Athawale, VP technical research at Kotak Securities, said. "On the downside, it could slip to the 50-day SMA (simple moving average), around 59,500–59,200. On the upside, above 60,500, it could move up to 61,000–61,300."
