MUMBAI – NPCI International Payments Ltd., the international arm of National Payments Corp. of India, Friday signed an agreement with Malaysia's national payment network Payments Network Malaysia Sdn Bhd for a phased implementation of QR code-based merchant transactions between the two countries, the payment service provider said in a release.

In the first phase, Indians visiting Malaysia can access their Unified Payments Interface applications to make cross-border merchant payments at touchpoints accepting payments through Malaysia's national QR-code payment facility 'DuitNow QR'. DuitNow QR is operated by Payments Network. In the second phase of implementation, Malaysians visiting India can scan UPI QR codes to make payments using their 'DuitNow' applications, the release said.

"Our partnership with PayNet marks an important step in enabling seamless QR-based merchant payments between India and Malaysia, offering travellers a familiar, secure, and convenient payment experience," Ritesh Shukla, managing director and chief executive officer of NPCI International Payments, said. "This collaboration reinforces our commitment to simplifying cross-border payments while strengthening digital and economic connectivity between the two countries."

In 2024, the finance ministry had said in a report that NPCI International Payments had reached out to more than 80 countries to link the Unified Payments Interface with their own fast payment systems. NPCI has also executed agreements with more than 20 payment partners covering over 30 countries, the ministry had said. India has tied up with several countries to enable Unified Payments Interface transactions. These countries include France, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, and Japan.  End
