Govt OKs another 500,000 tn sugar export in 2025-26 to manage surplus

MUMBAI – Government has allowed export of an additional 500,000 tonnes sugar in 2025-26 (Oct-Sept) to sugar mills to facilitate higher sugar exports and help in managing surplus sugar availability in the country, Ministry of Consumer Affairs said in a release on Friday. The additional export quantity will be made available to willing sugar mills only if they are able to export at least 70% of their allocated quantity by Jun. 30, according to the release.

 

"The export quota will be allocated on a pro-rata basis among willing sugar mills, and mills shall submit their willingness within 15 days from the date of issuance of the order," it said. The export quota so allocated shall not be swapped or exchanged with any other sugar mill, the release said.

 

The government had earlier allowed exports of 1.5 million tonne sugar for sugar season ending September. Out of which, only about 197,000 tonnes of sugar has been exported until Jan. 31. In addition, approximately 272,000 million tonnes of sugar has been contracted for export by sugar mills as on Friday, according to the release.  End
