NEW DELHI – After nearly four years, the government has opened up wheat exports and permitted 2.5 million tonnes of wheat to be shipped out of the country, according to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution. It has also allowed exports of an additional 500,000 tonnes of wheat products, over and above the 500,000 tonnes announced on Jan. 16. India had curbed wheat exports in May 2022.

The government has opened wheat exports amid expectations of higher wheat production in 2025-26 (Jul-Jun), availability of ample wheat stocks, and easing prices. It also wants to prevent distress sales during peak arrivals. "Government's decision to permit export of 25 LMT (2.5 million tonnes) of wheat and 5 LMT (500,000 tonnes) wheat products will help stabilise domestic prices, improve market liquidity, ensure efficient stock rotation, and further strengthen farmers' income while ensuring national food security," the ministry said in a release.

Around 7.5 million tonnes of wheat stocks are available with private trade entities in 2025-26, up 3.2 million tonnes from a year ago. This substantial year-on-year increase indicates a comfortable supply position in the country, the ministry said. In addition, wheat stocks in the central pool with the Food Corp. of India are projected to be 18.2 million tonnes as of Apr. 1, up from 11.8 million tonnes a year ago, it said.

In addition, India is likely to have another year of robust wheat harvest as its acreage has risen to 33.42 million hectares in 2025-26, up from 32.80 million hectares a year ago. This reflects strong farmer confidence in wheat cultivation supported by assured procurement mechanisms at the minimum support price, the ministry said. End
