MUMBAI – Wholesale automobile sales started 2026 on a positive note, rising 23% on year to 2.38 million units, data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers showed Friday. This growth was led by a healthy rise in passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, and three-wheeler sales, Rajesh Menon, director general of SIAM, said in a press release.

The lower goods and services tax-led demand and initiatives announced in the Union Budget for 2026-27 (Apr-Mar) to strengthen India's manufacturing base are expected to aid the sector in the long run, Menon said. Additionally, existing policy tailwinds are also expected to support growth in the medium term, he said.

Domestic wholesale sales of passenger vehicles rose 12.6% on year to 449,616 units in January with its production rising 5.6% on year to 457,832 units. Sales of two-wheelers last month rose 26.2% on year to 1.93 million units, while their output grew 16.1% on year to 2.35 million units.

Almost all sub-segments under three-wheelers registered year-on-year growth in sales, except electric rickshaws, which fell 7.9% on year to 925 units. Sales of mopeds under the two-wheelers segment rose 16.1% to 48,607 units in January.

Indian automobile companies exported 571,066 units of total vehicles in January, up 23.5% on year. This rise was aided by a 54.6% on-year increase in exports of three-wheelers during the month to 36,879 units. Passenger vehicle exports rose 33.4% on year to 76,822 units last month. Overseas despatches of motorcycles rose 16.5% on year to 390,667 units in January.

During the period, the sales of two-wheelers rose 7.8% on year to 17.86 million units. Sales of three-wheelers rose 10.4% on year to 685,385 units in Apr-Jan.

In the 10 months ended January, companies in India produced a total of 27.49 million vehicles, up 9.8% on year. This was led by a 22.3% rise in the output of three-wheelers during the period to 1.08 million units.
