MUMBAI/NEW DELHI – Muthoot Finance Ltd. expects good growth in its business in the coming quarters, backed by strong momentum in its gold loan business. "The gold loan business per se, as well as the other businesses, are doing well. But potentially, today is a time for the gold loan business. The gold loan business is going very well," the management said in the post-earnings call. The gold financier's net profit for the December quarter nearly doubled on year to INR 26.56 billion due to a sharp rise in its business.

The Reserve Bank of India recently issued draft regulations proposing to allow branch openings without prior approval. If implemented, the company management said it will be able to open branches wherever required, and it will be positive move for the gold loan business.

Muthoot Finance has nearly 5,000 branches and Muthoot Money has about 1,000 branches across India. The company management said current market environment is highly favourable for the gold loan sector, and it is well positioned to take advantage of opportunities in the gold loan sector.

The company management said it is not just the rise in gold prices driving the loan demand but difficulty in getting unsecured loans and a slowdown in the microfinance sector leaving many borrowers with limited financing options. So more people are using gold as a collateral to meet their cash needs.

The company management said it was yet to consider the possibility of offering loans against silver. The shares of Muthoot Finance closed 3.40% higher at INR 4,066.90 on the National Stock Exchange. The results were announced during the market hours.  End
