MUMBAI – The Defence Acquisition Council has approved the purchase of equipment worth about INR 3.60 trillion for the defence forces, including multi-role fighter aircraft Rafale. The council, headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, accorded its 'Acceptance of Necessity' to various proposals for the Indian Air Force, the Indian Army, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Coast Guard, an official release said.

The council approved the purchase of the Rafale aircraft, combat missiles, and an Air-Ship-Based High-Altitude Pseudo-Satellite. The multi-role fighter aircraft will strengthen capabilities across the spectrum of conflict and also boost the defence capabilities of the Indian Air Force through long-range offensive strikes, the release said. The majority of the fighter aircraft to be procured will be manufactured in India.

The combat missiles will enhance the stand-off ground-attack capability with deep-strike power and very high accuracy, the release said. The Air-Ship-Based High Altitude Pseudo Satellite will be used to gather intelligence, conduct surveillance, and conduct reconnaissance. The satellite will also be used for electronic intelligence, telecommunication, and remote sensing for the military, it said.

The council also approved the procurement of anti-tank mines 'Vibhav' and the overhaul of Vehicle Platforms for Armoured Recovery Vehicles, T-72 Tanks, and Infantry Combat Vehicles BMP-II for the Indian Army. Vibhav mines will be used as an anti-tank obstacle system and the overhauling will enhance the service life of the equipment and will ensure preparedness and operational efficiencies for the army, the release said.

The council also approved the purchase of a 4-megawatt marine gas turbine-based electric power generator and the P-8I long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft. The marine gas turbine-based electric power generator will reduce the Indian Navy's dependency on foreign manufacturers for power generation, the release said. The P-8I aircraft will materially enhance the Navy's long-range anti-submarine warfare, maritime surveillance, and strike capabilities. The council also approved the acquisition of an electro-optical/infra-red system for Dornier aircraft, which will enhance the maritime surveillance capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard, the release said.  End
