MUMBAI – Benchmark equity indices closed lower Thursday, primarily dragged down by losses in shares of information technology companies, which mirrored an overnight decline in shares of their US peers. A stronger-than-expected US employment data for January trimmed hopes of an interest rate cut by the US Federal Reserve in the near-term, which was the immediate trigger for the fall, analysts said. However, these stocks have been under pressure since last week, when Anthropic's artificial intelligence tool, which it intends to replace traditional software coding, sent shock waves through software stocks globally.

Shares of HCL Technologies, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Tata Consultancy Services, and Infosys ended 4–6% lower and were the worst-hit stocks in the Nifty 50. TCS' market capitalisation continued to fall during the session, declining the most among other Nifty 50 constituents. Among Nifty 200 companies, KPIT Technologies, Coforge, Oracle Financial Services Software, and LTIMindtree were the worst-hit stocks and ended 5-7% lower. Sonata Software, Birlasoft, Zensar Technologies, and Tata Elxsi declined the most among Nifty 500 companies, and closed 5-8% lower. The Nifty IT index fell 5.5% to 33160.20 points, its lowest closing level in nine months.

The Nifty 50 ended at 25807.20 points, down 146.65 points or 0.6%, after falling sharply in the last hour of trade. The BSE Sensex ended 0.7% lower at 83674.92 points. Shares of ICICI Bank closed 2% higher and limited the losses in the 50-stock index. Bajaj Finance and Shriram Finance rose the most among Nifty 50 companies, closing with over 3% and 2% gains, respectively.

IT stocks have been under pressure after a recent commentary by Anthropic and Palantir signalled that US-based companies may be willing to switch to AI tools for software development and other services which are generally provided by traditional software companies. New announcements on the use of these tools may continue to spark volatility in IT stocks in the near term, Rishubh Vasa, a research analyst from Indsec Securities and Finance, said.

Data released by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics on Thursday showed that non-farm payrolls increased by 130,000 in January, higher than 55,000 additions estimated by economists polled by Dow Jones. This stronger-than-expected data has reduced bets for an interest rate cut by the US Federal Reserve in the near term, which is a negative for Indian IT companies, since lower interest rates translate to higher discretionary spending power of US-based clients. Additionally, flat retail sales growth in December raised concerns about low demand from US-based consumers, who contribute significantly to the top line of domestic IT companies.

Shares of Hindustan Unilever ended over 2% lower after the company's profit after tax from continuing operations for the quarter declined 30% on year to INR 21.18 billion. The company expects 2026-27 (Apr-Mar)to be better than FY26 due to portfolio and channel transformation and volume-led revenue growth.

Shares of Bharat Forge ended over 3% higher after the company's consolidated revenue for Oct-Dec, at INR 43.43 billion, convincingly surpassed Street estimates. However, the company's consolidated net profit of INR 2.93 billion was slightly lower than analysts' expectations. Shares of Gujarat Fluorochemicals ended 3% lower after the company's consolidated net profit for the December quarter fell over 18% on year to INR 1.03 billion and was lower than analysts' expectations.

Among other stocks impacted by their December-quarter earnings, RattanIndia Enterprises ended over 6% lower after the company's net loss for the period remained largely unchanged from the year-ago quarter at INR 1.61 billion. Shares of Amara Raja Energy & Mobility closed 5.5% lower after the company reported an over 51% on-year fall in its net profit to INR 1.52 billion post market hours Wednesday, which was lower than analysts' expectations.

Shares of Lenskart Solutions ended almost 10% higher after the company reported a strong performance in the December quarter. The company's consolidated profit after tax jumped to INR 1.33 billion from INR 18.5 million in the year-ago quarter, according to the report. Jefferies hiked its target price on the stock 10.5% to INR 575 and said the company reported an exceptional quarter with strong growth and smart margin expansion across geographies, CNBC TV18 said.

Shares of Zydus Lifesciences closed 2.5% higher after the company, along with its US subsidiary Zydus Pharmaceuticals USA, entered into a patent settlement agreement with Japan-based Astellas Pharma over the latter's Mirabegron medication for a sum of $120 million.
